After landing on the peninsula’s west coast, Narva´ez, who had leadership problems during the conquests of Cuba and Me´xico, had problems again. He divided his forces, sending 300 men into the interior. Soon, they were isolated, without food, and under attack by natives. As their numbers dwindled, Narva´ez decided to build rafts and travel down the Florida coast. That worked for a while, but in 1532, a hurricane destroyed the small flotilla, and all but eighty died. Eventually seventy-six would die, and only Cabeza de Vaca, Alonso Castillo Maldonado, Andre´s Dorantes de Carranza, and Estevanico, a Moorish slave, endured.
