This device calls visual attention to these passages, which erupt out of similar stimuli to Quentin's consciousness, and which Faulkner seems to have wanted readers to see as thematically related to each other. They were printed, however, with normalized paragraph indentation, no doubt because editors and compositors worried about how confusing a paragraph that ended flush with the right margin might be. Did Faulkner ink these paragraphing changes on his ribbon typescript? Did he instruct Cape & Smith to make these changes?

The Library of America text (1985), published as a Vintage International paperback (1990) as Sanctuary: The Corrected Text is a new text of his revisions, published originally in 1931. 5 I have been able to edit The Sound and the Fury, to make corrections for the Vintage paperback, and will be able to make other corrections as necessary. I have overseen publication of that novel's manuscript and carbon typescript in facsimilefour different versions of a single novel. I have edited the two different versions of Sanctuary and have overseen facsimile reproductions of Faulkner's typescript, a third version, and of his holograph manuscript, from which can be reconstructed, I suspect, a large number of other "versions" of the original text of Sanctuary.

More than one friend has argued with me that Faulkner's editors at Random House did him a big favor in editing Absalom, Absalom! so heavily. Saxe Commins and company rewrote significant portions of that novel by deleting many passages, by drastically altering the punctuation, and by "clarifying" many of Faulkner's deliberately ambiguous pronoun references. Questioned whether I was going to restore one particular passage, I was able to respond with an enthusiastic Yes, partly because I do not think it my job to improve Faulkner or to impose my editorial powers on his aesthetic prerogatives, although obviously an editor cannot escape doing so.
